Static WebP → GIF (256 colours)
When you need GIF instead of WebP
WebP is a superior format in almost every technical way — better compression, transparency support, animation, and higher colour fidelity than GIF. But the web has legacy corners where GIF is still required. Some WordPress plugins, older email clients, early-generation social media embeds, and enterprise CMS platforms only accept GIF for animated content. If you have a WebP image and a platform that insists on GIF, this tool converts it.
Static vs animated WebP — what this tool supports
WebP comes in two types: static (single image) and animated (multiple frames, like a GIF). This tool converts static WebP images. If you upload an animated WebP, the tool will process the first frame only. Animated WebP conversion — preserving all frames in the GIF output — requires frame-by-frame decoding and is a more complex operation. It is on the roadmap.
For most common use cases — converting a screenshot, a graphic, or a saved web image from WebP to GIF — this tool handles the job perfectly.
The 256-colour limit — what changes when you convert to GIF
GIF was designed in 1987 and is fundamentally limited to 256 colours per frame. Modern images typically use millions of colours. When this tool encodes your WebP as a GIF, it quantises the colour palette from millions down to 256 using the Neuquant algorithm — the same algorithm used by professional GIF encoders. For graphics, logos, and images with flat colours, the result is nearly indistinguishable. For photographs and images with smooth gradients, you will see some colour banding or dithering.
If your image is a photo and colour accuracy matters, use WebP to JPG or WebP to PNG instead — both formats support full colour without the 256-colour limitation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does GIF support transparency?
Yes — GIF supports 1-bit transparency: one colour is designated as transparent. However, this is very different from PNG or WebP alpha transparency. Full alpha channel gradients are not supported in GIF. A transparent background in WebP will convert to a hard-edged transparent cutout in GIF.
Why does my colourful WebP look different as a GIF?
GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame. Photos with smooth gradients and complex colours will show visible banding or dithering — an expected artefact of the GIF colour limit, not a bug in the tool. For full-colour output, use WebP to JPG or WebP to PNG instead.
Will animated WebP convert to animated GIF?
This tool currently handles static WebP images only. Animated WebP has a complex frame structure. If you upload an animated WebP, only the first frame will be converted. Animated support is on the roadmap.
Is GIF still relevant in 2026?
Yes, for specific use cases. GIF is required on some older CMS platforms, social tools (Slack, Teams display GIF animations inline), and platforms that don't support WebP or APNG. For modern animation and high-quality images, WebP and APNG are better choices.
Is my WebP file uploaded to a server?
No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your images never leave your device.
